本書は、ご親切に導入として当時の背景の説明もしてくれている。
世界史に疎い人も抵抗なく、読めるのではないかと思う。
その一方で、小学生が読むには少し辛いように見受けられる。
主人公のサリーは魔法が使えるわけでもないし、
派手なアクションをするわけでもないが話に引き込まれる。
運や才能に任せた強引に解決するのではないところにある。
もちろん、彼女が能無しといっているわけではない。
彼女は、そんじょそこらの男以上の実務の能力を兼ね備えている。
そして、主人公の意思の力が見て取れるところにあるのだろう。
本書を子供にとらせたとき、どう感じるだろう。
勧善懲悪物語として、サラっと読みすすめてしまうのはもったいない。
勇気のなんたるかを感じ取り、心の奥底にしまっておける。
本書はその役割を十二分に発揮できる良書である。
